Black Lentil Stew

  • ½ cup dried black lentils 

  • 3 cloves garlic

  • ½ chopped onion

  • 2 inches fresh ginger (minced)

  • 1 cup tomatoes, chopped (or canned)

  • Salt/ Pepper to taste

  • ½ teaspoon each of ground coriander, ground turmeric, and ground cumin

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil 

  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

  • 2-3 cups broth or more - depending on your desired thickness


  • Sauté garlic, onions, ginger in hot oil, add lentils, stir until warm

  • Add tomatoes and herbs 

  • Pour in broth to cover ingredients

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Simmer until lentils are soft 

  • Serve warm with a dollop of yogurt, cilantro and rice
