Poached Pears in Red Wine


  • 2 pears, D’anjou or Bosc -- still firm 

  • 1 bottle red wine

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 2 sticks cinnamon

  • Lemon peels (half a medium lemon)


  • Heat wine, cinnamon sticks and lemon peels together in a small pot

  • Peel pears, cut in half and scoop out seeds

  • Place pears in boiling wine

  • Simmer until pears are soft (about 15-20 mins)

  • Remove pears, cinnamon sticks and lemon peels

  • Continue to simmer wine, reduce to half the amount and use as sauce over pears

  • Serve with ice cream, yogurt, or on its own!
